No, hardware based scanning, at least the type we use, is a card that
sits in the machine. More like an SCSI card than anything else because
the drives connect directly to it. as a read/write request is made the
card scans the data. In a way this is slower than a standard access to
the drive, but since it has onboard buffers it is also a bit faster when
writing. The card itself has it's own processor and has upgrades done
via flash ram.
