Forgot to add that, in addition to the transmitter, you should 
also check out the receiver and its antenna. The antenna wiring 
might look OK but be broken internally. Wiggling the wire at the 
stress points while doing a range test will cause erratic 
operation if that's the problem. Pulling on the wire at the stress 
points may also tip you off. Or check electrical continuity right 
up to the solder joint on the receiver circuit board. Or just 
solder in another (temporary) antenna. 
Get together with someone who has a similar system, i.e., AM, 27 
or 75 MHz, etc. Swap crystals if necessary. Use his transmitter to 
check out your receiver, and use his receiver to check out your 
transmitter. 
Another possibility is one or more bad cell(s) in the receiver or 
transmitter battery pack(s).
