If you have curl onboard try this to see if your coreutils fold app is utf8
capable;

  curl ftp://184.69.113.90:15243/fidonet/squirrels.ansi | fold -s -w $COLUMNS

where $COLUMNS is the character width of your screen.  On my terminal it is an
actual enviroment variable and in the case of the machine I am typing this
message on is 106.  The wrapping is perfect btw using the above curl line.
