There have been periods in my life when I went without television for a
couple of years at a time.  I felt no sense of loss, as I had other
things keeping me busy.  But I will confess that in recent years I have
become addicted to a few mindless situation comedies that provide 30
minutes of light amusement.

A friend of mine did better than just feeling no sense of loss, though.
He did a few turns on the DEW line, above the Arctic Circle, away from
TV, radio, sunlight, fresh air, and so on.  He had a large stack of
books sent to him, spent his spare time reading, and went on to make a
fairly good living as a science-fiction writer when he got out.
