Nope, she was Henry VIII's oldest surviving daughter, who died of cancer at
the age or 43 or thereabouts. She got the moniker from making it a capital
offense to be a practicing Protestant in England. One of the available
punishments, as I recall, was beheading. OTOH, she was actually pretty
typical of the monarchs up to that point in England, at least for a Tudor.
This is pretty far off-topic, and I probably have some facts screwed up, but
anyway....
It does make you wonder what the lawmen of that day thought of all the stuff
you could get hung, shortened, or drawn and quartered for.... A few decades
earlier, having the wrong ancestors was enough to ensure a trip to the
headsman. That one didn't happen as much in Mary's time, because the family
line in question had been pretty well wiped out by her father and
andfather.
And we thought American politics was rough!
