I experience this often with my Maestro E336. I think it is due to the line
conditions, as it would seem that the VFC retrain does *everything*, rather
than just assess line conditions.

Try dropping the DCE connect speed in the modem, and see if the problem goes
away. If it does, then line conditions are your problem.
