XP setups I've worked with since it came out.

No kidding.  I've tried uploading using downloaded programs, and from
within Internet Explorer and from the command prompt and from Explorer too.
 A few files upload, or sometimes just a part of a file uploads (makes a
mess of the site when this happens) and then it locks up.  I'm sure it's a
setting problem, but documentation is so bad I can't find the problem. 
Maybe it's related to the IE problem that the "back" key seems
useless.  Whenever I go back to a page, it acts as if I have pressed
"reloads" and reloads the entire page from the web server and not
off the hard drive.  That really slows down the surfing.
