Oddly I find it easier because of the things mentioned in the MS pro UNIX
Hotmail report i.e. mostly only starting stuff/loading stuff which you
need. I accept that a newbie will just go "oh yes I need a password
free ftp server set to serve every dir from / down....".

That & the fact that sshd comes with every distrib.
