The biggest model airplane I have seen was during the recently held F3A world
champs in Kasaoka, Japan, where they during the airshow day flew a huge
Boeing 747. It was powered by 2 (!) turbine jets (Sanwa Electronics). The
remaining 2 engines were just mockups which I understood when the Japanese
crew told me that the price of those jet engines was about $6,000.00 each.
After lots of preparatory work and repeat failed engine starts, finally they
got the two jets working, revving at 100,000 rpm.
The two engines, sounding just right, produced more than enough power for the
huge 747 to take off. Actually it built up too much speed, and in order to
hold the airplane within the flying area the pilot made a too steep 90 degree
banked turn. The tailplane was overloaded and was instantly ripped off. Then
we were all whitnesses to one of the most expensive model airplane crashes
ever...
