No - in that particular (brilliant, I'm sure) case, they aren't kidding. The Avtec cable has/had required components IN THE CABLE. (Or at least did, when the original tests were done.) Rumor grade information: It was said to be a resistor/capacitor combination, likely a needed phase corrector to pass return-loss requirements. If the above is true, it's even sensible. Return loss is rather important. I'm not particularly suprised at Netcrummy turning out junk that doesn't meet spec without a patch in the cable - just disgusted. Not confirmed - I haven't seen one. Have had a report from a chap who opened up the cable and looked at the junk inside. (To anyone inflicted with a current Avtec - wouldn't mind confirmation/denial of the current state - the components are said to be mounted inside the wall plug end of the cable. One screw to undo - spill the beans for us curious types - are there still strange bits inside the end of Avtec cables?)
