CALIFORNIA LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY
THE PRICE TAG ON POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
According to the L.A. Times, West Hollywood has spent
$250,000 thus far on their legal battle over the "Saturday Night
Special" ban they enacted in 1996. The city, as an inducement
to pass the ban on affordable handguns, was promised financial
support from several gun control groups in the event that they
were taken to court. West Hollywood, the first city in
California to pass such a ban, was subsequently sued by NRA and
the California Rifle and Pistol Association and has yet to
receive any assistance from those groups who pledged their
assistance. As one political observer noted, "that's a high
price for political correctness and the legal battle isn't
over...."
RIGHT TO CARRY
On Tuesday, Nov. 18, the Assembly Public Safety Committee
will hold an interim hearing on the "right to carry" issue.
Attending in support of "right to carry" will be Professor John
Lott of the University of Chicago and Texas State Rep. Suzanna
Gratia-Hupp. Opponents taking part in the two-hour hearing will
include representatives from Handgun Control, Inc. and Johns
Hopkins University. Law enforcement officers on both sides of
the issue will be participating as well. Taking the lead role in
coordinating proponents for the hearing is Assemblyman Rico
Oller, the sponsor of AB 1369, the right to carry legislation
for the 1997/1998 session.
NRA MEMBERS' COUNCIL RECEIVES STATEWIDE AWARD
The Orange County NRA Members' Council was the recipient of
the Outstanding Adopt-A-Highway Volunteer of the Year award
presented by Keep California Beautiful, the California Department
of Transportation, and the California Department of Conservation.
The volunteers took on the task of painting over an Orange County
stretch of freeway which was corrupted by graffiti. Of the more
than 50,000 volunteers participating in the program, the Orange
County NRA Members' Council was chosen because "of their unusual
above and beyond the call of duty' commitment to keeping their
stretch of highway graffiti free," said Marlene Mariani,
Executive Director of Keep California Beautiful. Their award was
presented at the Orange County Board of Supervisors meeting on
November 4.
