I was once watching Letterman give his monologue, and the CC
displayed a COMPLETELY different joke from the one he was telling. I
thought the CC was just out of sync with the audio, but Dave didn't
tell the joke later in the monologue. It wasn't until the next night
that he said the joke.
CC is great when words are completely unintelligible - unless the
stenographer couldn't hear them, either. But sometimes learning
those words can be disappointing as well. For example, in Lethal
Weapon III, Rene Russo tells Mel Gibson, "Closed is a lingere shop
with no windows." Huh? It turns out those ARE the right words! It
must have been an inside joke.

Every time I've been to the local Computer City recently, they've
had a person demonstrating IBM's ViaVoice, which costs under $100.
It seems to work fairly well, but it does makes some mistakes, and
a 150 MHz or faster Pentium is needed unless you talk s l o w l y.
