Not sure if libsmapi functions are really what I need here but seeing that
it is a depandancy for libfidoconfig I'll need it for now.  I have an idea
I want to try out that will use direct access to the needed lib functions
that could be used as the basis for conversion.  It might not work but it
is worth a shot.
