Concerning _Security_, Charles George said to Troy H. Cheek in SCANRADIO:
CG> I find there a lot of the security people are active in Radio of
CG> different sorts.
I got my start from others in my field. The security office had a little 20
channel base/mobile with some of the local LEO and EMS channels, but I seldom
paid attention to it. A couple of Halloweens back, one of the other officers
loaned me a 16 channel handheld, and that was really interesting. After that,
I paid more attention to the one in the office, and eventually bought my
first 20 channel handheld.
To make a long story short, I eventually ended up with the much praised (and,
IMHO, worthy of it) Pro-43 handheld, which caused the guy whose handheld I'd
originally borrowed decide he needed to upgrade!
CG> I like the fact that we have several Security Officers at the store
CG> I work at, since I could not do that type of work.
I could do other types of work, but I like security.
CG> What types of services do you listen to the most?
Mostly the local LEO and EMS, though I always have a bank dedicated to local
security services, wildlife agencies, towing and garage, and community
transport. On occasion, I listen in on CB or Ham conversations. And, of
course, I never go anywhere without first consulting NOAA weather radio WSK48
operating on a frequency of 162.55 MHz from your Nation Weather Service
office in Morristown, Tennesee...
CG> What type/s of antenna/s are you using?
On my Pro-43, the rubber ducky. On my Pro-2035, the built-in collapsable.
I've also got a multi-band magnetic-mount job that I use with either. It
used to sit in the corner of my bedroom on the window sill, but here lately
it's sitting on the transmission hump in front of the back seat of my car.
(Yes, I know it's supposed to go up top, but I have having to keep moving it
every time I lock up the car...)
CG> I am only using the built in whip on the Pro-2035. I may if I ever
CG> feel like climbing put up something else.
I may do that someday, but so far things work pretty good with the more
limited antennas. I'm blessed (or cursed) with a lot of strong local
signals, and a couple of the big repeaters for this area are just a few miles
away. (On clear nights, I can see the lights blinking on the towers.)
CG> Since I am a licensed ham, I would like an antenna for both the
CG> scanner and the 2 Meter ham band.
My magnetic-mount claims that "This antenna will receive all radio bands
between 25 and 1300 MHz. In addition, it will transmit (up to 25 watts) and
receive on the 70-centimeter (440-450 MHz), 2-meter (144-148 MHz), and
6-meter (50-54 MHz) amateur bands." Catalog No. 20-012. Yes, it's designed
for mobile, vehicle mount use, but none of the other antennas I've tried seem
to have the frequency spread or sensitivity.
CG> Since my last message, I found about a 100 more channels to fill
CG> with frequencies, I may use up the 1000 channels on the Pro-2035
CG> eventually. I think channels on a scanner is similar to Space and
CG> Memory needed for a computer.
Exactly. Now that I have channels to burn, I've programmed in a big list of
frequencies I'd been given but had never tried because I assumed they were
boring or out of range. Now, I'm listening to LEO's three counties away.
... A moose by any other name is still a big ol' hairy deer-looking thing.
