Juliam, I am an AVID postcard collector. The four areas I collect are:
Greeting cards, ethnic oriented postcards, and nudes. I do not collect
moderns though, most of what I am looking for is from the great postcard
rennissiance age of 1890 thorugh 1914.
In greeting cards, the area I mostly collect, I will take just about anything
I can find. Greeting cards focus mostly on holidays, and I have cards from
New Years, Valentine's day, St. Patricks day, Easter, Decoration day, 4th of
July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Also birthday, Happy Returns, etc.
I have about 500 cards in this part of my collection, most brilliently
colored, many embossed and often with gold foil highlights. The holiday I am
MOST looking for is Halloween. 2nd in line are 4th of July, Decoration Day,
and St. Patrick's Day. At the TOP of my want list is any SANTA postcard
where Santa is dressed in a BLUE CLOAK. I know Santas in yellow, black, or
green cloaks are more rare, but I like the blue ones the most, and they are
rare in and of thmeselves. If you have *any* postcards like these described,
PLEASE write me back ASAP.
In Ethnic postcards, I have many "black-racist" cards, especially the linen
surfaced color drawn cards from the 20-s thorugh the 40's. I don't have any
Japanese cards, because mostly, theme postcards were a long passed phase by
the time WWII hit, but I know some were made, and I'd love to have at least
one sample card for my collection. In the ethnic and "what we would now call
racist" catagory, I have maybe 30 postcards.
Nudes, well, I have about 25. Mostly photo postcards of topless women from
Burma or Africa, from maybe 1920 or so. I also have some postcards that
would look like "antique erotica" stuff - white women say in their 30's
posing in front of a picture canvas in a studio, nude. These all have sephia
tones on them. None have stamps and postmarks on them. And I have five
"hardcore" postcards, known as "Brothel cards" which are as XXX as any
current porno magazine. These are very rare, (I know only 2 dealers that
have them) and they were given to clients of bordellos in France mostly,
around 1895 through 1905, as "tokens of the house's appreciation" for their
patronage.
Finally, I collect the 30s and 40's linen-surfaced postcards of the houses of
the movie stars in Hollywood. These are very common; you usually find them
all over at flea markets for 25 cents or less. But I've only started
collecting these, so if you have any, let me know!
I hope to hear from you!
