Could also be in a semi-tractor diesel engine.

I learned the other day that semi-diesels use gallons, rather than quarts
of oil. And that oil will go pretty far because of the same tecniques you
describe above.

I think so.
Back in the early 60s, I used to buy used bulk oil, filtered and cleaned
at 15 cents per quart. They would put additives in it to bring it up to
par. I had an old Ford that would burn 4 quarts of oil every 25 miles and
my job was 28 miles from home. Had to stop half way and put in a couple of
quarts, every day. I fixed that Ford by buying a used but junk Ford and
swapped engines.
