Yep, getopt(3) in FreeBSD suggests it is POSIX, but of course there are a
number of platforms that provide a vastly incomplete set of POSIX functions
unless you restrict yourself to GNU C. I try to avoid restricting myself
to any particular compiler unless it's difficult not to.
Did you know MSVC++ 6.0 doesn't provide opendir()? Amazing. I wrote my
own to use Win32 API calls though. :-)
