It's going to rain tonight. Some weather forecasters are saying snow,
but I checked with the National Forecasting Services in New Jersey, who
are ususally right on with their 24 hour predictions for this section,
and they're saying rain. Spring is well under way now. A lot of plants
are in bloom. About a third of the trees have leafed now, although the
leaves are still very tiny. This time of year, everything, even big
treees, look somehow fragile and tender with all those tiny new leaves.
I realized today that spring comes in slowly in Jersey. Probably it
does out there too. But if we were much further north, we wouldn't have
this slow growing spring. In the more northern climes, the time between
the real cold of winter and the real heat of summer is a much shorter
time. In Jersey, there are several weeks when the days are actually
quite warm (50's and 60's f; 10-20 c) but the nights still fall below
the freezing mark. So each spring flower comes in its own time. New
spring blooms begin in March (occasionally February) and continue
through May. Summer, on the other hand, hits here about the same time
it does New England. We really don't have a longer period of real heat.
Just a shorter period of intense cold, and longer transition periods
between summer and winter.
