Well, by evening it was like nothing ever happened. The woman who runs
the place has a Thoroughbred mare who colics on a regular basis, almost
monthly when she is in foal, and she kept telling me I was
over-reacting...that it was a minor colic. But I lost my first horse in 1971
when he colicked, an impaction, and I will never forget the three days of
hell we went through then. The vet was going to operate Monday morning at
8:00; Comanche died at 5:30 a.m. It was a bit like Baby; he died before he
hit the ground. That was the last time a horse I owned colicked, so I was in
tears when I got to the stables with Spot. Lori thought it was funny. I
STILL don't.
Then she started giving me a lecture about sand colic; I only have ONE
HORSE who will eat those psyllium crumbles - Dub. The other two won't eat
the horse psyllium in any form, mixed with ANYTHING! But let me explain:
About eight years ago, before anyone out here started marketing psyllium
for horses, I had a vet tell me to give each horse 1/2 bottle of Metamucil
monthly. I just buy two bottles and split them three ways, so each horse
gets more like 2/3 bottle. They ALL eat that, with water mixed in with plain
bran. But Spot and Casey don't like the horse stuff! But for seven years
Dub has eaten the Metamucil, Casey for 5, and Spot for 6 years. So I figure
if it works, don't fix it; the generic Metamucil is cheaper than the horse
stuff per month anyway.
The vet said it didn't appear to be sand colic, but she was dehydrated.
Hell, we ALL are in the summer out here, just like in the spring we are all
congested from allergies! No known reason for the colic...but we will watch
her very closely anyway.
Hey, not to change the subject, but have you tried the large doses of B
vitamins for your wrist yet? I can tell when I'm not taking enough vitamins
as my hand falls asleep driving my truck at work. Something about the angle
of the steering wheel or something.
