Janis, Just after reading you question on how to control cutworms, I
read this little blurb in our weekend newspaper. It was written by a
lady who said that she had no trouble with cutworms because...
Cut the two end off of a 2 litre pop bottle. (I don't know what the
eqivalent would be to this size in the US, but the bottle is about 12
inches high.) You now have a cylinder which you dig into the ground,
leaving about one inch above the ground level. Put soil in it and
plant your seedling. I think that cutworms will be near the surface as
they cut the seedlings at that level and then they live off of it.
Cutworms are similar in appearance to a grub except that they don't
have little legs like an insect (which a grub has). They are about an
inch long and grayish in colour.
Hope this helps.
