In the Sondheim song, it's definitely "mar-aye-ah", as documented
by various recordings. (Changing it to "mar-ee-ah" would also, in
my opinion, seriously damage the dramatic value of the original lyric.)

Hazards of filking a song you've seen but haven't heard...
