How long does 'eventually' take? :)  Meanwhile, it vigorously prompts me to
turn it off when not in use (only using it for dialing out to ISP so far).

It had come setup with %M0 (and most other defaults), now fixed, so at
least LEDs flashing while online now indicates something worthy of
attention.
