Vince: If you successfully completed the make install script, it would have run max with the option to create the user database. Most of us forget the one time, initial run of Max with a special switch to create the user database. The 'make install' script ended with this when it properly ran. I think I did run 'make install' more than once to get things to complete. If I remember correctly, it is 'max -c' for creating the database, and max runs in a console mode (i.e. like 'max -k') for that run. Take care.....
