Yeah -- I'll probably write a thread that starts up and feeds kgetch based on curses polled (blocked) input. That will be cheap on the CPU. Then if I can figure out how he handles the interrupt, I can probably simulate something similar to get tweaked from the polling thread. I think that will work nicely.
