Hi Bob,
Just returned from the library with Stoll's book it *is* called _The
Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage_,
Copywrite 1989, published by Doubleday Books. Here's the scoop from
the book jacket:
"For months a computer intruder moved through a maze of American
military and research computers like an invisible man-until Clifford
Stoll saw his footprints. Over a year later, to the delight of the
baffled CIA, FBI, and NSA, Stoll nailed him, and wound up on the front
page of the _New York Times_. With all the suspense of a classic spy
novel, this amazing and unprecedented book is the first true story of
international computer espionage, as only Clifford Stoll could tell it.
Clifford Stoll was an astropysicist turned systems manager at
Lawrence Berkeley Lab when his discovery of a 75-cent accounting error
alerted him to the presence of an unauthorized user on his system.
Instead of simply expelling the intruder, however, Stoll let him wander
through the system while carefully recording every keystroke.
Thus began a year of stalking an elusive, methodical "hacker" who
was prowling the nation's computer networks, using numerous techniques-
from simply guessing passwords, to exploiting software bugs, to setting
up bogus "Cuckoo's Egg" programs--to gain unauthorized access to
American computer files.
This trail led Stoll--and a half-dozen national agencies--through
computer networks all over the world, ending up in Hannover, West
Germany. But Stoll wasn't satisfied: he set up a sting operation, and
uncovered a spy ring in West Germany linked to a mysterious agent in
Pittsburgh. This spy ring sold their computer secrets to the KGB for
cocaine and tens of thousands of dollars. It was finally broken in
March 1989, when Stoll _again_ found himself on the front page of _The
New York Times_. Newspapers across the country followed suit, calling
Clifford Stoll a genuine, if somewhat unlikely, American hero.
Computer espionage is without question the single most important
security issue of the 1990s. This is the first and only book to lead
readers into, through, and back out of that esoteric, shadowy world."
Appears to be an interesting book, especially for those interested in
system security. Happy reading!
