You are probably right.  More than likely golded is still viewing string
characters at the 1 byte limitation as in the traditional C definition for
char.  In my current enviroment with an unset LANG I get this result using;

  :read !gawk 'BEGIN {print length("Møøse")}'
7

whereas;

  :read !LANG=en_CA.utf8 gawk 'BEGIN {print length("Møøse")}'
5

Note the difference when deploying locale definitions for char.  This behavior
has a major impact on word wrapping.  Just for a laugh try this and see what
happens;

  LANG=en_US.utf8 golded
