ANSI *should* work but will require a rewrite to get rid of all the DOS-think
leakage accumulated over the years by developers and ansi artists who bought
into the IBM 8 bit codepage scheme. Personally I don't bother but have used
ANSI colours to highlight text every now and then. That idea works just fine
with ALL text up to and including including utf8 characters.
