MS>I'm in need of recommendations for a backup power supply that would have
MS>to meet the following specifications:
MS>- Be battery powered (i.e. no generators)
MS>- Supply 12 volts
MS>- Be able to power 3 scanners, 1 5-watt ham radio, and a CB radio
MS>- Decently priced ($100-$125 Maximum)
Matthew: The cheapest battery would probably be a small motorcycle
or lawn tractor battery. But I would suggest a gel-cell as being
safer. I use a 6ah 12 gel for just this duty. Costs about $25 mail
order, or check with a company that services those emergency lights
used in public places. Radio Shack has a 4 ah battery for $25. If
you don't need a lot of capacity, model car batteries are a good
buy. Can you power from your car/camper battery? If you have a
camcorder battery, you might be able to use it. Seems that
batteries are always a problem. Aren't they fun? I charge mine
from a suitable wall charger, but you can charge from a RUNNING car
if you do it right. Hope this helps. Tom, in SW Colorado
