I doubt that the difference in power consumption between a laptop and a
desktop would, over the lifetime of the unit, make up for the difference in
selling price up front.

Reminds me of when my dad got a Diesel Oldsmobile for his company car in
1981.  Comparing the price premium of the Diesel engine option over the
price of a regular 350 cid V8, calculating the difference in fuel economy
of the two engines and the difference between the price of regular gasoline
and Diesel fuel at the time, I calculated that he would have to drive the
car 150,000 miles to break even.

This, in my opinion, is the kind of economy you are considering.
