That's okay since your reply is bang on.  We'll get there eventually but for
now we're in a very good place by the looks of it.  Way ahead of EVERYONE,

I am betting a non-existant LANG enviroment variable in the BBS.  Try adding
"LANG=en_US.utf8" to the beginning of your nano call in the BBS and see if that
fixes it.
