I just installed nano-2.5.3 and don't see this hard wrap issue you mentioned.
However, the softwrap is also not wrapping the entire word to the next line
much like 'set lbr' does in vim.

I wonder if Gentoo maintainers have done anything with it separate from the
original developers upstream?
