VC> Also on another point the areafile config seems to VC> be based on the old 2.0 VC> standard as against the v3. I will send out a VC> section of both the files and VC> message areas out in separate msgs. WG> WG> What's the difference between the two? The main one for me is that in version 3 you could add a tree structure for both the file and message areas. Due to the number of areas, I have this tree structure running under Max 3.01 under OS/2. I've got the same style structure functioning for message areas in the 3.02b Linux maximus. I haven't converted any file areas yet, so I haven't tested the file area tree structure, but expect it to work, since the message area setup is working. While I've compiled the max.ctl file with silt using -2u, I don't have any software working under Linux to check out that the Max 2.x message and file area databases are being properly generated under the Linux implmenetation. But silt is taking the options without complaint. Guess I need to check out if the extra files are being generated. Another difference is the way user levels are handled. Since I didn't change anything in this area when I upgraded from Max 2.x to Max 3.0, I haven't fully tested this part out. But if it wasn't working, the security levels (such as Sysop vs Normal, Limited, Demoted, etc.) wouldn't be working. I don't remember if the change was made in going from max 1.x to 2.x or from max 2.x to 3.0, but you can now use names instead of numbers for message and file areas. By default, max still uses numbers.... Because I'm using the tree structure I am using names, and it is properly working in Max 3.02b Linux. If you change the area names for the initial message and/or file area, you also have to make the appropriate chanages in the control file for the initial new user areas. This works for the message areas. I haven't yet tested for file areas. WG> FWIW, I based the sample distribution config files on a WG> "virgin max install" (302) that I did on a Windows box, WG> then hand-edited the files to try and get things WG> working. That makes sense. Some of the newer features were not used by the default install. Take care......
