OK... I've searched high and low -- through print & broadcast media,
and I still can't seem to find an answer to this puzzle...
What I'm wondering about is this:
Now that the Feds & State gov'ts are suing tobacco companies (like, well
-- I'll say it -- like gangbusters) are they STILL paying subsidies to
tobacco farmers? Has ANY legislation been written to stop those subsidies?
Is any legislation planned?
If the subsidies are STILL being paid out, how much you wanna bet that it
will actually be the settlement money, doing a revolving door turn, when
that money is allegedly earmarked for all those "noble causes" like
health care, child care, and education, etc.?
Also, I don't know if this tactic has been broached by the tobacco lawyers,
but couldn't they challenge the rulings about that "evil tobaccy weed" by
pointing out the Fed's own cozy little arrangement with tobacco farmers?
After all, if the government feels it is of the utmost importance to pay
subsidies to tobacco farmers to ensure a steady crop, then tobacco must
not be this "demon weed" -- it can't be ALL bad, right?
I'll add this -- I find smoking to be disgusting & I can't get near smokers
as the smoke is bad for my allergies & asthma, and triggers migraines, and
I also have sleep apnea... BUT (and this a BIG BUT -- no jokes, guys), I
find the Nicotine Nazis even more disgusting -- it is hypocrisy & hubris,
coupled with a blatant attack on freedoms & rights that tramples on much
that is held dear to patriotic Americans. It is reprehensible to think
about the Nanny State -- and every day even more is surrendered to what
should now be called "Uncle Nanny" (maybe that should be NINNY!)... What
bad habit will the fascists go after next? Maybe it will even be a GOOD
habit -- it won't matter if some knee-jerks decide "it" is a threat...
SIGH...
