The only one of those parameters whose placement matters is the last, 'f', and that's only because it takes a parameter (the filename). Also, if you want full words, you can have them if you're using GNU tar (or most any GNU program). In this case, the command you're talking about would become: tar --extract --verbose --ungzip --file filename.tar.gz (or "--ungzip --extract --verbose --file" -- it makes no difference).
