Then either nano was not installed with unicode support, or your locale is not
set to UTF-8. If you're still using Gentoo, check to make sure the "unicode"
USE flag is set, and/or if your locale doesn't contain UTF-8, there lies the
problem.

HTML decoding in Fidonet is just as, if not more silly than unicode.
