You're right of course, the modem works at other locations, it also
depends on the type of switchboard, here at a TAFE college we do
have problems with some modems. That's probably why Netcomm modems
were used here, they don't seem to have that problem.

I'm not impressed with the amount of RFI/EMI radiated by the 1428VQE
modems internal switch mode regulator, it may be more efficient this
way, but it also means you cannot listen to an AM/FM radio placed
anywhere within 2 to 3 meters of the modem. I've tried spraying the
inside of the plastic case with a special Nickel based RFI/EMI
shielding paint, but it has had little effect. It appears the power
cord from the plug-pack also acts as an antenna. :-(

Overall, no doubt it works as advertised, but as I mentioned before,
it's data throughtput on exactly the same lines and locations as a
pair of Netcomm M34F's is around 600 to 800 cps less, and that's using
a pair of them connecting at 31k, while the Netcomms were operating at
28k. Also, the Netcomms, as most other modems, use a linear power
supply regulator, hence little if any radiated EMI/RFI.

     Above for what it's worth,
     Cheers, Peter H.
