I just went through the whole procedure from scratch, cvs download etc.,
and just finished with a "make build" at approx. 10:00am PDST.  I
didn't bother with a "make install" just yet as I'd like to do a
backup of the prior configurations first. Anyhiw, it successfully compiled
but still get many warnings, no failures.  Here is the last few lines of
"make build" just for fun:

gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/max'
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/mex'
gmake[1]: Nothing to be done for `top'.
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/mex'
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/util'
gmake[1]: Nothing to be done for `top'.
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/util'
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/sqafix'
gmake[1]: Nothing to be done for `top'.
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/max/maximus-cvs/maximus/sqafix'
Build Complete; edit your control files and 'make install'

Look good?  From this angle it does.
