Actually, I just bought the 1994 MacGregor 26 and hav -> it on a maiden run in a nearby lake only once (last weekend) in prepa -> for hauling it to Mexico, where it will primarily be sailed. I only h -> ride on a Mac 26 before I bought mine; that was on a friend's, at the -> Birthday Regatta of the Arizona Yacht Club at Roosevelt Lake northeas -> Phoenix. I was impressed with the comfort, stability, and speed. (We -> in third in one race against about ten Catalinas and Santanas.) -> -> My friend's 26 (which he sold last year before I was ready to acquire -> boat) was an older model with the dagger keel. There was a selection -> 26's at the shop where I bought mine, including a very old one with a -> keel (heavy to traler) (under $5,000), several medium-age boats, and -> newest used one, which I bought partly because it has the swing keel. -> figured, with my concern for running aground on rocky bottom in the -> Northern Gulf of California, a swing keel might survive whereas a dag -> board might get jammed and damaged by inadvertent contact with the bo -> -> The trial run went just fine. The owner of the Sailboat Shop demonstr -> details of rigging, launching and retrieval. The wind shifted directi -> constantly (a dam-created lake in the desert, surrounded by mountains -> There were a few good puffs, in which I was able to get up some real -> and heel the boat over nicely. About the onloy embarassment was, whil -> learning how to start the (old) Evinrude 9.9 HP outboard for docking, -> paid too much attention to the motor and didn't notice another radica -> direction shift; I unintentionally gybed.... but with the boom so hig -> the deck, no harm done. None of my three passengers was in harm's way -> the boom flipped across. -> -> Putting the boat back on its trailer in shallow water at a lake-ramp -> requires partially lifting the swing-keel and the swing-rudder; direc -> control under motor-power is poor under those conditions. The ramp wa -> congested with two other boats, and there was limited turning room on -> approach. I nearly missed entry to the trailer. It was my first attem -> get on the trailer. Next time, I'll head further out, and try to make -> straight an approach as possible. -> -> So far, I'm happy. But the real trial comes in seawater within the ne -> couple of weeks. Most of my sailing experience is in fresh water (lak -> and on the Charles River in Boston). Come to think of it, with the -> pollution, the Charles wasn't so fresh. :-) -> -> The fellow from the Sailboat Shop used my boat as a platform to video -> the brand new MacGregor 26X which he had just delivered to another cu -> that morning. One of the first 30 built, the 26X has a redesigned hul -> large open transom and a ship's wheel instead of a tiller), but its -> greatest novelty is having a 50 HP outboard. One can tow skiers under -> behind that sailboat! I think it sells for over $20,000. The new owne -> motored around for several hours, wearing big, wide grins, before the -> tried to rig the sails. (They had, incidentally, traded their 1993 -> MacGregor 26 plus lots of cash). -> -> --- DB 1.58/004910 extensive reply and all the great info. Gonna have to start saving my pennies (although will reach the goal faster if I start saving $100.00 bills!) Anyway, I'll keep looking for more information abut the MacGregor 26 (and the 26X) and will look forward to hearing from you again reporting on the great sailing south of the border!
