subject: City Codes

BFH> Great to hear you got things orgainzed. I have
BFH> other problems in my area,
BFH> city code doesn't even allow clients to visit on
 BFH> business, e.g. buying
BFH> insurance, and coming over to sign papers is
BFH> illegal according to code. How
BFH> is this great nation to have an economic comeback
BFH> when industry and hard work
BFH> is prohibited from home, just to keep the
BFH> neighbors happy and the front lawn
BFH> green? I'd like to hear from others of strange
BFH> city codes that make no sense.
BFH> Even no noise, business visitors are prohibited,
BFH> that is really bad. Another
BFH> one we got is the residential address may not be
BFH> advertised as a business in
BFH> the Yellow Pages!!!! Got that! They don't even
BFH> allow phone calls to come in!!!
We don't have our home addresses listed in the phone book as business
addresses (neither of us wants to have customers on our front steps at odd
hours and weekends - my partner has a wife and small daughter to consider,
and I have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from an armed robbery and attempted
hostage taking). How we've got around that is to have an office service with
a downtown address for our mailing address. Since wwe are licenced as "doing
business" from there, (it's our business address) that's the address that
appears in the white pages and yellow pages. Some customers have dropped
their payments off there (no problem, all mail and anything left in my name,
my partners name, or our business name is forwarded to my home address). If
customers walk in there asking about services or asking to speak to one of us
in person, the folk there tell them that we aren't in at the moment, and can
they get a name and address so we can get back to them? The office services
company we use serves a number of businesses, they're very businesslike, and
considerably cheaper than having a real downtown office. (Like 100th of the
price.) We've used them for years and have been very happy with the results.
