 Jet Smile{at} Happiness Study

To celebrate the launch of Smile{at}, Jet has conducted a major study into
UK happiness. We were interested to find out the crucial factors that
make us happy or sad. What makes us smile and why are some people
happier than others?

How happy is the UK?
What makes us happy?
Who smiles the most?
Which is the happiest city?
Men versus women
Are 'singletons' really miserable?
Which are the happiest workers?
Who do we think is happy?

  HOW HAPPY IS THE UK?

41% of people said they were happy or very happy with their life in
general.
Worryingly, almost one in five people said they were unhappy or very
unhappy with their lives.
In terms of numbers, this means that there are approximately 6 million
very happy people in Britain and around 2 million very unhappy people.
WHAT MAKES US HAPPY?

For most of us (82%), we think spending time with our friends and
family will make us happy.
But there were some differences between the sexes. 1 in 3 men said
playing sport and driving their car made them happy, while shopping and
eating chocolate is likely to boost the serotonin levels for almost
half of women.
Success at work is an important factor for both men and women, with
nearly half of people admitting that it has a significant affect on
their happiness.

WHO SMILES THE MOST?

If we look at the nation in terms of their propensity to smile, we
build up a sometimes amusing map of the UK. Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow
are Britain's smiliest cities, whereas the more sour-faced should
perhaps head to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, where you will not be
alone!
If you are hoping to be greeted by smiling locals then in your trip
around the UK your route should go something like this:

 Sunday Belfast
 Monday Newcastle
 Tuesday Bristol
 Wednesday Plymouth
 Thursday Norwich
 Friday Leeds
 Saturday Edinburgh

NB Whatever you do, avoid Liverpool on a Monday, where people are the
least likely to be smiling (roughly one in 100 would be smiling here!).

WHICH IS THE HAPPIEST CITY?

The happiest people are in Leeds, followed by Belfast, the unhappiest
in Southampton, closely followed by Plymouth.
One in five Londoners are either unhappy or very unhappy with life in
general, while in Birmingham you're more likely to be just content.

TOP 5 HAPPIEST CITIES TOP 5 SMILEY CITIES UNHAPPIEST UK CITIES
 1 Leeds 1 Bristol 1 Southampton
 2 Belfast 2 Glasgow 2 Plymouth
 3 Sheffield 3 Leeds 3 Edinburgh
 4 Newcastle 4 Newcastle 4 Norwich
 5 Birmingham 5 Nottingham 5 Manchester

    DON'T GO HERE FOR SMILES
    1 Plymouth
    2 Edinburgh
    3 London
    4 Southampton
    5 Norwich

MEN VERSUS WOMEN?

In the study both men and women believe men are the happiest. However,
that myth is soon pulled apart as we see women are categorically more
fulfilled in all aspects of their life from love, family, 'happiness'
and level pegging at work.
The only area where men overtake women in fulfilment is financial
fulfilment - perhaps a clear sign of the still lingering pay divide.

ARE 'SINGLETONS' REALLY MISERABLE?

Co-habiting and married people are generally happier than other groups,
but singletons are not the unhappiest group. Three quarters of single
people are at the very least content with their lives, so it's not all
doom and gloom for Bridget and Brad Jones' out there.
However, separated people are the unhappiest group, with 42% admitting
to being unhappy or very unhappy - so perhaps Brad and Jennifer should
get back together.

WHICH ARE THE HAPPIEST WORKERS?

Which professions are happiest with their roles and jobs? Once again we
see healthcare scoring very highly, which is perhaps more encouraging
news for the NHS, whilst finance, media and professionals also rate
highly.

IT/Telco are easily the least happy at work, which could act as a
warning to employers in this sector to address happiness in the
workplace if they are to retain good staff.
WHO DO WE THINK IS HAPPY?

Whilst both men and women in general believe men to be the happiest
sex, the study shows that this is not the case, a misconception that is
repeated though this research. Females only start to believe they are
happier as they reach their fifties.
Only 3.4% of people view pensioners as a happy group, when in fact the
over 55s are the happiest age group in UK society.
