Good points.  As for the reasons the Federation Doesnt like AI, so far
practically every encounter has wound up being 'A bad thing'  Data, and the
EMH being the sole exceptions as far as I can tell.  And perhaps this is
where the Federation begins to deal with one of its own blind spots.  That
sort of introspection and learning could be good.   I still think the
Inital
bias against AI in the Federation will work against it.



My problem here is this - portraying the Federation as wrong for being what it is.

Suddenly the federation we see on TV looks *stupid* and *clueless*

And for the life of my I can't imagine why Hailey, Sinclair, Mantovanni,
McCall or Tim Kirk  would believe in, and risk their lives to advance a
society so obviously wrong and stupid.

Why would they?  Answer - The Federation must have *good*, *solid* reasons for
acting the way it does and believing the way it does.

The Federation stance on AI hasnt been stupid or specious.  The AI wars
alluded to by several here and the expierence with AI so far in trek leave
very good reasons to be suspicious of them

it's your job - as the fic writer - to write the story so that I can
believe that characters and people seriously act that way and live that
way.  If the answer is "Well, they haven't learned any better
yet."  then this doesn't work
for me.

Reasons I have (and have borrowed) for why the Federation does not deal
well with AI overall.

1) The Devestating AI wars on earth left a very deep scar on humanity and a
"never again" attitude
2) The AI's encountered by Trek have mostly been insane, dangerous, or both.
