I don't know how the GUI tools do it. At the command line:
$ dpkg -S $(which file)
file: /usr/bin/file
$ dpkg -S xdg-mime
xdg-utils: /usr/share/man/man1/xdg-mime.1.gz
bash-completion: /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/xdg-mime
xdg-utils: /usr/bin/xdg-mime
$ apt show file
(etc.)
If you don't have apt, try aptitude show file etc.
