Sounds reasonable.

So, how do I know which programs belong to the same group ?   Does a program
tell me when I ask it for it ?  Can I ask the "window manager" for them ?
If so, how ?

Not really.

It just a question to why two programs return a mimetype, but not always the
same value.   Your explanation does give a reason - and in the direction I
suspected no less. :-)
