Not only that but for the most part they simply use petrochemical fuels
burned at remote power plants to generate the electricity that propels
them.

 Uh, they're called *elements* because they are not further divisable
into constituent parts.
Hydrogen is indeed the most plentiful element in the universe however
that does not make it economical as a fuel until such time
a cost effective way is found to produce it.
