can ty this, works for me

startup.ncf
set auto register memory above 16 megabytes = on
	(didn't solve the problem for me either, but I just left the
	 command)

autoexec.ncf
register memory 1000000 800000
	register memory [starting adress, lenght]
	depending on how much memory there is. this is for 24 Mb

when you enter  on the commandlline you seen some
explanation of the command;
	Syntax: REGISTER MEMORY  
	values must be given as hex numbers, and must be on
	paragraph boundaries (i.e. multiples of 10 hex)

You should start with 16Mb (1000000), leaving 112Mb (7000000 (although
I'm not shure about that, I'm not used to do hexadecimal math...)), so
your line should something like

register memory 1000000 7000000
