CJ> screenplays. Maybe he's rich enough that he's no longer
CJ> hungry? He's got laurels enough to rest on.
CJ> Sally, do you know?
SS> He and his first wife, Charlotte, came to visit me in Chicago in
SS> 1956 or so. He was then in the army stationed at Fort Knox. They
SS> had spent every dime they had and needed money to get back to the
SS> base on time. He sat down at eight in the morning and wrote a
SS> story. Around noon I drove him to the Near North Side where Playboy
SS> was then located. I waited in the car. He was back in ten minutes
SS> having sold the story for an amount that boggled my mind ($500 I
SS> think -- large money in the days when sf magazines were paying a
SS> penny a word). On such experiences does confidence rest.
I can easily imagine him going at his work with that kind
of intensity, though.
He once as a stunt wrote a story in a storefront window.
SS> I suspect he is not very hungry now but I haven't talked to him
SS> about it. When we talk it is mostly of old friends.
Tell him that we still want more, but that he has given
us enough for us not to be a pest about our demand for more.
