| subject: | Philthy Guitar Show |
There was no way in hell I was going to miss the Philly guitar show,
even with snow forecasted.
Fortunately, it was only very cold.
Upon walking in with my 335, I was assaulted by all sorts of folks. It
seemed that the dealing was being done mostly by dealers. No one wanted
to give me what I wanted, so I figured it would just sit at home and
appreciate in value.
Karen said this one guy was following me around. I don't notice these
things, but after she pointed him out, I decided he was not a guy I'd
want mad at me. Karen said he was going to buy it. But the offer was
low, so I declined.
Walking around, it was a terrible show for lefties - well, at least for
picky lefties like me. Saw a $2k LP that I didn't like, a couple of
G&Ls (including a Fullerton, which was just ok), some Carvins, 2
J-basses, and a 1963 (same year as me) Strat refin.
This guitar, folks, was all that and more. It had this incredible vibe.
I felt like Nigel Tufnel picking it up... FEEL it! It just SINGS.
Unfortunately, they wanted $3200, and wouldn't take a grand, so I had to
tearfully leave it alone.
I did get to check it out through a `53 Deluxe, which was kinda nice.
As there was nothing happening in lefties, I decided to indulge the Need
for weed. Tried 2 Deluxes, all `53s. Gerald Weber's book states that
the later Deluxes (5E3, 5F3, used 12AX7 preamp tubes) were better. I
have never played a 5E3, but these 5C3's sounded decent.
One in particular sounded FANTASTIC. Karen told me it was The One.
Karen was right. She also picked out my tweed Champ - the girl knows
tone. I left with it. Even paid for it first.
And interesting side note was that the dealer hooked it up to a Vintage
30 in another amp to illustrate the way to get more volume before
breakup. As soon as he played it, the brown sound went away... those
Oxfords really have the tone.
This amp sounds wonderful. It's tone to the BONE. Not a loud amp at
all.. 2x6V6's yield about 20w, and it uses these bizarre preamp tubes
(6SL7, SN7, SJ7). But it's a sweet clean tone, and as you raise the
volume, it gets progressively louder and more distorted. Billy Gibbons,
here I come.
Now all I need in an AC-30.... the kit's now out at $150.
Also picked up ram. Win `95 runs much better for it. If you have 16M,
go to 32 - you'll never regret it. Anyone have a K5-166 chip to sell?

Hi Jeff...
-=} Jeff Vineburg, you said this to Jim Walsh on 11-14-97 12:32 {=-
JV> It's a pretty bizarre color code, so I don't know how much help I'll
JV> be. Do you have an ohmmeter? If so, measure the resistance between all
JV> the wires and let me know what you come up with.
JV> If not, try talking to a Yamaha dealer.... they should know.
Thanks for the info Jeff, much appreciated. :)
