subject: INDEX OF 2 FIELDS

Hello Ron,
RT>>BC> I have a table who have an index made with 2 fields.
RT>>BC> index on DATE+NO_MAG
RT>> ...I think this doesn't exactly what you think it does... :-|
I think that I understand what you think, but I forgot to say
that these 2 fields are caracter and it's the reason that you
      think that.
RT>> I think YOU are thinking you are indexing on a date, followed bij a
RT>> number. Instead of this you are JUST indexing on a strange date in
RT>> the future!
Not exactly, what I thought is that DbSeek can seek for 2 fields
condition. Like DbSeek ("JAN 97", "132") --> search for
     date = JAN 97  and  no_mag = 132.
I tought that, because you can create an index with more than 1
field but it's just to show the data in order, it's not for seek.
RT>> What definitely works (but maybe a little slow) is creating an Index
RT>> on one of the two variables en set a filter based on the other. Then
RT>> perform a seek...
Yes I found that solution too and I think it's the better one.
BC> I have to use that in Delphi and Clipper 5.2
RT>> (I just stepped over from Clipper to Delphi) handles indexes
RT>> and databases slightley different than
RT>> Clipper. My advise is to stick to one of the two when creating an
RT>> application. Considering Clipper is obsolete and Windows has the
RT>> future, I would advise you to put your money on Delphi...
I like Delphi to program in Pascal for Windows, but for the database
I'll get a used version of Clipper VO or Foxpro.
Thank you for your help !
     Alp !
