Yeah, but the problem is that you forget everything from your
previous life when you're reborn.

Yes and no.  In the Hindu belief, IIRC, you cycle through each
lifeform, serving one term as a male and one as a female.  And you
can be reborn in a lower form to pay off extra karmic debt.  What
that means is, if you're a silly ass in this life, you can reborn as
a stupid ass in the next.
