Go to Radio Shack, and look at their voltage regulators: note
the 740x series. Open up the modem, and find the voltage
regulator. (It's probably the same kind. :) ) The "x" number is
the DC voltage output. The input should be a couple of volts
higher. Now look for a large capacitor near the voltage
regulator. It should be labled with a voltage (perhaps 16V ?),
and several hundred to a couple thousand mfd. If you find a
capacitor, then you may feed the modem AC at no more than 2/3
the rated voltage of the capacitor, and at least 2/3 of (the
"x" voltage plus two). If you do not find a capacitor as
described, then your modem probably needs DC, at the "x"
voltage plus two. Note that you can feed an "AC" modem DC, with
no ill efects (at the DC voltage I described), but DO NOT
attempt to feed AC to a DC modem!
